Four former politicians, two journalists and an ethicist embark on an unscripted exchange of ideas about democracy.

In a joint initiative between Parliament of NSW and The Ethics Centre to mark International Parliament Day, a panel of former politicians and political journalists took the hot seat to discuss the ethical dimensions in politics, in a live streamed event from the NSW Assembly on Tuesday 30 May 2020.
The discussion featured:
– Former Premier Nick Greiner AC
– Former Premier Bob Carr
– Former Opposition Leader Kerry Chikarovski
– Former Minister Sandra Nori
– Sydney Morning Herald’s political and international editor Peter Hartcher,
– Sky News Australia’s First Edition host Laura Jayes

The Parliament follows in the Westminster Parliamentary System based on adversarial principles, earning the nickname the ‘bear pit’. This unscripted conversation is a real and raw conversation about the tough topics facing Australia’s democracy.

Our special guests took their positions inside the chamber with Dr Simon Longstaff. A limited number of current MPs were invited to bear witness and fire questions at the group from their positions in the live audience.

Bare Pit was live-streamed via the NSW Parliament’s Facebook page from 1 pm on 30 June 2020. The full conversation is now available via catch up. Tune in below.
