Is eating meat selfish?

We adore animals. But does that mean their rights trump our interests?

We love animals and we are animals. Most of us want improved welfare for wild, captive, agricultural and domestic creatures. But is elevating animals to share equal rights with humans a leap too far?

Speakers

Ruth Hatten

Is a lawyer who specialises in animal welfare. Between 2010 and 2013, Ruth was Legal Counsel for Voiceless, the animal protection institute and she has active in the animal law movement in Australia since 2007. She is the Intensive Animal Agriculture Welfare Law & Policy Adviser for the Barristers Animal Welfare Panel.

Catherine Marriott

is a beef industry expert. Catherine has worked as a nutrition and feedlot consultant in the Live Export Industry and more recently was the founding CEO of the Kimberley Pilbara Cattlemen’s Association. She is now the WA Manager for the CRC for Northern Australia.

Phillip Wollen

is a philanthropist, vegan and a prominent member of the animal rights movement. He Philip Wollen is the former VP of Citibank, an Order of Australia recipient and founder of Kindness House. His work is grounded in non-violence (‘Ahimsa’) with more than 450 projects in 40 countries.

Paul de Gelder

A formal Paratrooper and Navy diver, Paul lost two limbs in a shark attack in 2009. He is now a top motivational speaker, passionate environmentalist, adventurer and mentor to school kids.

Leslie Cannold

Dr Leslie Cannold is an ethicist with an adjunct position at Monash University. She is also well-known as a social activist, author, commentator and researcher.

James Bourne

Is a neuroscientist, medical researcher, and a member of the research committee in the government’s National Health & Medical Research Council. He has presented to the senate on the need to perform animal testing within biomedical research.
