"Embracing principles requires a strong ethical and moral foundation and a long-term focus that strikes at the heart of what we are trying to create, and creates an environment where people are inspired to do to the right thing."

JOHN MCFARLANE, CHAIRMAN BARCLAYS BANK UK, FORMER CEO OF ANZ

An organisation's culture might not always reflect the commitments laid out in its ethical framework - its purpose, values and principles.

The Everest Program assesses the level to which an organisation’s lived culture, and the actual systems and processes that drive the business, align with the organisation’s intended ethical framework – their purpose, values and principles. Through in-depth investigative and explorative processes, gaps between the ideal and the actual culture of a business emerge, along with areas where formal systems and behaviours are misaligned to the stated values and principles.

Our premium product offering, Everest is a detailed system of analysis that has been developed and refined over 30 years of practice. Proven to capture the experiences and perceptions of people across an organisation, Everest digs far deeper than a standard organisational review, identifying themes that relate to experiences over time and between groups of people, and reflecting them against the organisation’s formal policies and procedures.

Carried out impartially, Everest provides practical advice and guidance to align culture and governance with an organisation’s espoused ethical framework.

BENEFITS

When there is a gap between what an organisation says it stands for and what it does, significant damage can occur. Credibility is weakened, focus becomes distorted, and employees, clients and investors can become disengaged and cynical. Ultimately it can reduce competitive advantage and their social licence to operate.

Everest will help your organisation by:

  • Increasing awareness of organisational culture – the beliefs, attitudes and practices shared among staff and stakeholders
  • Identifying how current culture and systems are enabling or constraining the realisation of your goals
  • Providing you with a roadmap towards a robust culture, built on a well understood ethical framework
  • Creating operational efficiencies by aligning policies, systems and procedures with your ethical framework
  • Building a climate of trust for clients, shareholders and regulators
  • Unifying employees around a common purpose and encouraging values-aligned behaviour
  • Developing consistency between what you say you believe in and how you act
  • Enabling consistent decision making, reducing the risk of ethical failure and poor decisions.

OUTCOMES

The Everest Program provides an organisation with a clear understanding of its current culture, illuminating the gaps which lie between its ethical commitments and what occurs in practice.

Key outcomes include:

  • A detailed report into the ‘current state’ of your organisation, including how formal systems, policies, procedures, experiences and perceptions of people reflect the commitments laid out in an organisation’s ethical framework
  • Qualitative and quantitative information about the cultural performance of your organisation
  • An insight into employee wellbeing
  • A future roadmap to guide your organisation from its current state toward its desired state – including key recommendations to repair and build a robust culture aligned to its ethical framework.

WHO'S IT FOR?

The Everest Program can help organisations of any size or ambition look beyond their written policies and formal managements structures to consider how their culture operates in practice. To date the program has been executed across not-for-profit, government, major financial institutions and media networks.

Designed to be adaptable to any organisation and circumstance, Everest can benefit any organisation looking to build an in-depth understanding of its culture and governance systems.

HOW IT WORKS

The Everest Program consists of three related phases of work.

  • Sense-making
  • Insights development
  • Root-cause analysis

The first phase is sense-making, where we conduct interviews, focus groups and surveys to capture experiences and perceptions across an organisation. We also analyse a range of documents relating to codes, policies and processes provided to us by the organisation.

In the second phase we perform analysis on the collected data to identify themes that apply to the experiences and perceptions of the organisation’s staff and other key stakeholders. These themes also capture insights from our review of policy documents.

In the final phase, we use our insights and expertise to identify root causes of issues spanning culture and governance. Our root cause analysis guides the key recommendations delivered within our final report.
